The Supreme Court Nomination Blog
For your confirmation war watching pleasure, SCOTUSblog has noted that it now has a Supreme Court Nomination Blog. That is where continued discussion of Sandy Swingvote’s retirement will be, as well as presumably the obvious topics of potential and actual nominees and confirmations.
They’ve profiled some potential replacements, including Gonzales.
See also my initial reaction to O’Connor’s retirement in Sandy Swingvote.
Feed Lindsay
Via Lawren, this is just too funny. In a sad sort of way, since it shouldn’t be necessary.
I’ve thought Lindsay Lohan was a cutie since she was 13, but skinny Lindsay just looks grotesque. Hey girl, ever hear of Karen Carpenter? I still miss her.
Unyay
Poor Nin was laid off* yesterday. I know this feeling:
I knew there would be lay offs… but I didn’t think I’d be one of the lay offs.
Hey, at least she didn’t get fired for blogging.
Anyway, go over and leave some comforting words or whatever. Perhaps encourage her to blog more, in her newly copious spare time. Heh.
* This reminds me that instead of saying he was laid off, my little brother used to joke “I got laid without enjoying it.”
Sandy Swingvote
Deb called out to me in the bathroom, “Sandy Swingvote retired!” I love that nickname.
I wasn’t surprised, as we’ve not only been expecting it, but also I had seen the unupdated original of Mary Katharine Ham’s post over at Wizbang.
We’re all excited because things will get very interesting. We need a nominee who is, well, another Thomas. Someone who remembers that we have, like, a Constitution and that it says things pretty plainly and is limiting on government. Not someone in love with precedent at the expense of legitimacy.
Update:
Duh. I forgot to add the rest.
This retirement is notable because it represents the first Supreme Court Justice I can clearly remember being nominated, confirmed, serving, and retiring all in my adult memory.
Listen To The Casual Reply
Nancy Pelosi seems to have started a new cult*: The Supreme Court as God.
What a way to weasel out of openly supporting something unpopular.
* The difference between a cult and a religion is a couple hundred years, so it wouldn’t be a “religion” yet. Kind of like Scientology.
War of the Worlds
James Rummel likes War of the Worlds and disputes the idea that aspects of the film have any connection to 9/11, something I’d not heard before seeing them debunked.
He makes it sound intriguing, but it’s not on my list of movies to see this summer. Maybe on video, but there’s too much of interest coming up to toss any money to Tom Cruise now that he’s turned psycho. Or at least become public about his mental state.
I know there are people who never liked him, but I’ve always been agnostic, at least. I’m not one to avoid films vehemently just because of the views or off-screen actions of people involved, but all else being equal, it can become a factor.
These Things Take Time, But Thanks For Your Enthusiasm
Now this is a helpful friend. Yesterday one of my friends called, expressing an assumption that we must be moving on July 1st, since we wanted to move soon, and wanting to help. No, not on this planet would we be moving 25 days after deciding it would have to be done. And not merely because packing in something resembling an organized manner takes time. To someone who comes from money, waiting to accumulate enough wouldn’t be an obvious holdup.
I expect to have the money to move around the middle of August. That would mean most likely moving September 1 or later, hoping we didn’t miss finding the ideal place earlier. Would we rather move Right Now to avoid the creepy maintenance guy who seems to have such an influence on the landlord’s sister that her changed her personality to something unpleasant? Yes! Can we? No.
The last time I had that kind of ready cash in reserve was when I made the mistake of buying the van. The vehicle, tax, title and registration, and an immediate $1400 repair bill because it turned out to be a POS wiped out the last of my reserves that made clumpy cash flow less disconcerting. And so it will take until then to collect enough money net of paying some things that 2-3k can go down on an apartment without bankrupting us.
That’s $332 - 528 in 1963 dollars, and $438 - 657 in 1970 dollars, for what it’s worth. I love that CPI chart.
