Blowups Happen
I came to the office today in the snow, expecting to setup a new secretary on the network and help a lawyer with a missing program shortcut and some basic questions.
Then I got the e-mail that another secretary’s computer had blown up. It was one of the more spectacular power supply failures there has been, stinking up the area occupied by half the staff with acrid smoke from burned electronics. Many of them were able to hear the popping sound it made.
I scurried up there with a new power supply, swapped out the dead one, crossed my fingers and… it can’t detect a hard drive now. Doh!
Second computer in less than two weeks to have had an apparent power supply failure take out the computer more generally. This means my plan to do a few things and then leave early has been foiled, so I will get to go home after most of the snow has accumulated. At least I already removed the first four inches or so from the driveway before I left, so apart from they ought have plowed by then and mounded up the end, there won’t be as much as had I ridden out the storm.
Utah sounds pretty good right about now.
