About

Long, long ago in a blogosphere far, far away, we met in each other's comments. Who would have guessed that three years later we'd be married and blogging about our two daughters? Not us, but here we are!

A This And That Sadie Update, In Which She Finds Water And Noses Don’t Mix

Last night Sadie got to try apples for the first time.  This morning I expect she will really make a “why are you giving me this crap?” face when she gets the cereal.  Which she will proceed to eat with gusto anyway.  She seemed to like apples even better than bananas.  It always makes things interesting when she wants to take over the spoon handling duty.

She’s gotten to where she hooks her arm up over the side of the bassinet, which we use as a changing table, to help try to turn over or stay propped on her side.  She’s done it, but it’s narrow so turning over is tough.

It was almost scary watching her yesterday examine the crib from inside in intense “how could I escape?” fashion.  Then again, she picks up and examines her toys similarly, as if she’s scanning and storing their properties and figuring out what makes them tick.

Then there was last night’s bath…

She has a tub, which originally went in the kitchen sink until she started soaking the counter.  It has a shallow end of sorts, and a deep end of sorts, with a hump in the middle.  The shallow end has a low angle recline and is for smaller babies.  The deep end is made to sit up almost straight, with your feet up on the shallow end.

We’ve tried the deep end a couple times, but she can’t really sit well enough for it and it didn’t seem to work as well.  Yet she’s getting big for the shallow end.  At least, her butt likes to slide up onto and over the hump, so I have to keep moving her back up.

Last night she figured out that she could propel herself into a position where her feet are against the wall of the deep end, her back rests on the hump, and her head rests on the shallow end about where her lower back would be.  This floats her just enough out of the water, but maximizes water exposure so it’s warm and comfy.

I moved her back.  She proudly, immediately returned to the favored position.  I moved her back.  She did it again and found a way to be even better immersed.  So I finished her there and she had a blast.  Deb came to see, and mentioned baby swimming lessons, which I’d already thought of long ago, the way she takes to water.  Heh.  She was trying to crawl a few days ago and I pointed out she’d be moving along nicely in water; it looked just like swimming.

Then she decided it would be fun to try to roll over in the tub.  She twisted on her side, still keeping nose above water, deciding to taste the side of the tub.  Ick.  After a minute of testing rolling on her side, then going back, she managed to dip a nostril, which I’d been watching for.  Mouth in water?  No problem!  Nostril in water?  Waaaah!  I had her before she could do more than get the icky sensation, but that was enough.  I’m hoping it will be a deterrent against rolling over in the tub, learning it can be unpleasant to do so.  And if not, well, that’s why we’re kneeling over her the whole time she’s in the water.

She also seems to be learning that she can throw things, and it’s fun.  In particular, we got a big pack of plastic, semi-disposable baby spoons (the baby spoon version of those Tupperware-killing food containers that came on the market a few years ago) that she likes to chew on.  We put the tray on her swing, and she can have a spoon to play with on the tray.  She maybe plays a little, but mostly she throws them.  Toys no longer stay on the exersaucer tray, either.

Perhaps she’ll change, but right now she seems fearsomely energetic.  This will make it interesting for the shamefully sedentary, low energy parents…
