Ah, the perils of an elderly homestead…
You know, I don’t usually think about the fact that the structure we live in is something like 80 years old (maybe more, we’re not sure exactly). Every now and again, though, the subject comes up, generally as we discover one quirk or another. Frankly, I thought we’d found all the weirdnesses after having been here well over a year.
But last night Jay bought a gate for the doorway of the room that we most need to be able to contain the Sadie in, and he just now tried to install it. Only one problem: that doorway is so far out of square that he couldn’t.
Yeah, I know.
The top left corner made contact, and the bottom right corner made contact, but the other two corners had sizable gaps between the pressure points and the doorframe (between quarter and half an inch), and while that makes for a potentially amusing situation, it sure as hell isn’t safe.
Damn. Back to the drawing board.
Maybe if you could put a few blocks of wood in between the gate and the door frame. It might help to fix that problem until you can get a GC to come and “upgrade” your place. If you still lived in Fresno, my father or father-in-law could have helped you quite easily… Good luck on the renovations when you get to them.
