All Your Real Estate Are Belong To Not You After All
Coyote Blog has covered the eminent domain, properties rights issue I blogged about yesterday with a major roundup and discussion of the topic, including a link to coverage of the yesterday’s oral arguments over at SCOTUSblog. Sadly, the likely outcome does not sound promising.
And yes, I know that local property taxes are in effect rent, making real estate not “real” property that is ever truly yours. There is still a presumption of certain controlling rights and protection from being forced to sell arbitrarily, at market prices or otherwise, so long as you pay your “rent” or don’t otherwise cross the line. In a way, property taxes are the most honest taxes. Still, it would be more “honest” to pay for and receive services, or not pay and not receive services, pure and simple. But I risk digressing into a long tax and government and philosophy and whatnot post.
