About

Long, long ago in a blogosphere far, far away, we met in each other's comments. Who would have guessed that three years later we'd be married and blogging about our two daughters? Not us, but here we are!

Apartment Specs and Impressions

We got the keys, paid the security deposit, clarified when we pay the stray half month (we own it the 15th, paid a first month’s rent, but they only go first to first, so the beginning of October we pay half a month and that brings us even to November), and went to the apartment to check out the place again in more detail.  Plus the bathroom has had the ceiling fixed and been wallpapered beautifully, so we had to see that.

I took a large number of pictures, many of which are fuzzy or don’t really show much without the greater context.  It’s kind of hard to take a picture or two that shows how a room looks and feels.  I’ll post some later, probably with thumbnail sizes displaying on the page and two sizes available to click, rather than 400 pixel wide that can be clicked for 800.

The measurements give me approximate square footages of:
Kitchen 179
Kitchen Closet 7
Living room 209
Our Bedroom 184
Our BR Closet 39
Sadie’s Room 127 ("pink room")
Sadie’s Closet 8
Office/Storage 128 ("blue room")
Blue Closet 19
Bathroom 60

So basically it’s a 1000 square foot apartment, rounding up for likely inaccuracy and the fact that we “own” a little front hall space too.  I think Quincy was 700 or 750 if I included the porch, but my memory is sketchy.  I think Stoughton is no bigger than Quincy, just shaped and divided differently.  I know I described the new place as feeling almost twice the size of this one.  My best guess is that Stoughton is maybe 2/3 the size of the new place.

I also measured the counter.  Well, the long part, including the space the sink takes, which was 13 feet.  My estimate based on that is total counter length, excluding the sink, of 14 feet or so.  Yay!

The weak point in the new place is the cellar.  It’s little wonder they didn’t volunteer to show us where the hookups were.  The floor is wet extensively.  It’s crowded with the machines of the other tenants using the other hookups (here we’re the sole laundry denizens).  And the reason the landlord described the cellar as having “limited” space for storage is that the entire cellar is almost completely full of accumulated disarray of stuff from either the other tenants or previous ones.  We’ll be lucky if we can put our snow shovel and one set of shelves in there somewhere.  On the plus side, the shelves I have in the cellar can go in our closet and/or the bathroom.

On the other hand, there are real water heaters!  And safe, relatively modern looking furnaces!  Neatly labeled as to which apartment they go to!  (Here I figured that out by tracing where the pipes went.)

We’re going to have to do some shopping.  We’ll need to buy a couple good trash barrels, since those are not provided.  We’ll need some cleaning supplies and storage accessories.

We’re still totally in love with the place.  If anything, more so.  It’s nice to have the landlord fretting about scuffed wallpaper in the living room, where a chair apparently damaged it, wanting to replace it, telling us we shouldn’t have to cover it up.

We’re probably going to try putting Deb’s desk in the living room.  There should be room for that along with the couch, recliner, coffee table, TV-related stuff, and the chair we have in the computer room that belongs in a living room.  All while leaving plenty of open play area in the middle of the floor.  Most of the books will go in our bedroom But we’ll see exactly as we encounter the realities of actually emplacing stuff.

Stay tuned for pictures, later or in the morning.

Actually, I’ll be nice and give a little sample now.  The first one is in the kitchen, looking at the door into the living room, and in turn the door to our bedroom in the distance.  It doubles as a nice picture of Deb!

This one is looking toward the window alcove in the living room.  At something like 94 inches wide, the couch will fit comfortably in there.  It will also slow Sadie’s efforts to climb out the windows.

This is a look at the bathroom, facing toward the door from near the tub enclosure.  Sadie had just stumbled her way in.  Within three minutes of our arrival there, she had dismounted the roll of toilet paper from the dispenser and was parading around with the spindle the roll goes on.  It was cute, this first time.  Anyway, the wallpaper in this picture is brand new, as are the ceiling tiles, which Deb noted seem to be sound-absorbing ones throughout the place.  Good idea!

Okay, that’s all for now.  Well, except the “daily Sadie” might show you some more…
