Best Tenants Ever
I finally got the absolute last of everything out of the old apartment on Saturday. Yay! Well, except I still need to make calls and arrange to have the van hauled away. They’ll let it stay there a couple weeks if needed. I also need to go there tomorrow and put our trash out by the road. We managed to fill the barrels there, between rubbish brought from the new place, and cleaning out the van (the other thing I did Saturday). Still have to buy barrels for here.
Anyway, I met the landlord gang there Saturday night at 9:00 for them to see the place and give me the security deposit. You should have seen their faces as each of them walked in! It’s the cleanest, best condition anyone has ever left an apartment.
They’re thrilled, because it’s a bad time to have it vacant long, and they can almost rent it without touching it. The likely eviction of Slacker Dude upstairs just makes it an even worse time. Except for a little touching up, it doesn’t even need to be painted. I suggested they really should replace the carpets, but it’s a bad time financially so probably won’t happen. I hope they at least shampoo them. Especially since they need no vacuuming unless they dirty them doing work.
The landlord and maintenance guy swooped about the place examining what they wanted or needed to do. Despite our initial impression, the maintenance guy seems to be the best thing that ever happened there. He chided me for not having them replace the faucet in the bathroom for us while we were still there. They’ll do that, replace the toilet seal, add more smoke detectors (there’s one each apartment, and the one upstairs the battery had been removed to disable it), and so forth. Marcia asked me how much it cost to heat, which resulted in their finding out how poorly installed the new windows are and planning to fix the drafty ones. They’re even planning to clean out the cellar.
They said we know where they are if our new place doesn’t work out. Heh. It’s not a bad place; just too small, and it’s nice to have more professional landlords.
It is such a relief not to have to carry more stuff up the stairs! Well, except the new bookcases we have to get in order to get fully unpacked and organized. And the new desk. And the drawers for the kids. And the stuff my brother is giving us for the kids (big girl bed, etc.).
