Bookcase Mania
We’ve rethought how we’re going to arrange the apartment, which allows us to buy two more bookcases at some point.
That will bring the total bookcase count to fourteen.
Yep, there are twelve, filled to overflowing. Three have videos and DVDs, overflowing somewhat. A small one with little on it yet is in Sadie’s room for her books and stuff. The rest are filled with books, including the tops of the bookcases, and including books stacked on their sides atop the rows of properly shelved books, in almost every available slot.
With what we have, I was able to unpack every book. A wall of Sadie’s room is lined floor to ceiling with stacks of empty boxes within boxes, awaiting disposition.
Two more will probably hold most of the books atop books, depending how much free space we leave at the bottom for Sadie stuff, so she has something on big bookcases that she’s allowed to touch. But we’ll see.
Meanwhile, everything fits neatly in the bedroom, with space for a desk for Deb along a stretch of wall. The two additional bookcases will go where a desk would have gone in the living room, the only remaining large stretch of wall with no baseboard heat unit in the way.
If I ever brought home the books that belong to me that are at work, we’d need almost another two bookcases to hold them.
I got particularly creative with the two bookcases in the bedroom. There is exactly room for two of them, plus a narrow metal and wicker shelf unit, perfect for holding CDs. Because the small shelf unit can be tipped easily, we’d not been using it. I put it between the two bookcases. It’s wedged so well, it’d be unlikely to tip, but I also put screws in the bookcases to prevent it from ever tipping.
A pair of bookends turned up in one of the boxes, but sadly the two bookcases weren’t touching to make a continuous shelf on top.
But wait! One of the cabinets in the kitchen featured a spare shelf lacking hardware to support it. That wooden shelf ended up on top of my desk, waiting to be stashed somewhere. I used the cabinet shelf as a bridge between the two bookcases, which gave me several inches of extra space and resulted in a cool look. Cool enough to outweigh the makeshiftness of it all.
So the place is coming along nicely. It’s already as organized as the old place ever got.
