Digital Sender It Is
We were considering the HP Color LaserJet 4730xs MFP with optional Digital Sender 4.0 software for the client’s network scanning needs, adding better color printing to boot. I was concerned at the cost relative to the HP Digital Sender 9200 (which is a fancy name for “scanner” which can also send e-mail and stuff) and a basic color laser printer that isn’t a Multi Function Peripheral, but there might be something to be said for a single footprint and what amounts to having a color (and spare, in general) photocopier.
The big concern, after the latest software upgrades and incompatibility problems, was to make sure whatever we got would work without having to upgrade the network.
So I ended up on the phone with our sales rep at the place where we get printers and service for same, and then the two of us ended up on the phone with an HP support tech. The question: Will the HP Color LaserJet 4730xs MFP with Digital Sender software work on an NT4 network. The answer: “It’s time to upgrade.”
While I had everyone on the phone, I followed it up. The question: Will the HP Digital Sender 9200 work on an NT4 network? The somewhat surprised answer: “Yas. It will work with NT.”
Well then… selection made. I want to read up on the device some more before morning, but unless I see a reason not to do it otherwise, I’ll get to play with the Digital Sender. A former colleague who tested it for his company thought it was extremely cool, but overkill for my client. I guess we’ll just figure that one man’s overkill is another man’s forward-looking. Which is exactly what they were looking to be, rather than outgrowing it quickly.
