Draft Rot
It’s become clear that our big bedroom closet is almost as good as open to the outside world. I still need to do a full examination of the place, detecting drafts and all, but I noticed today there seems to be rot in the wall in at least one spot adjacent to the window frame. In that spot, cool air comes out from behind the wallpaper’s edge by the frame.
It could be that they need to do some significant work on the exterior walls in at least that part of the front of the house. Doh.
you could try a temporary fix of maybe using that two sided foam tape and plastic sheeting and try to seal that wall area up.. Its a cheep fix but should seal alot of the draft from comeing in.

Posted by on 10/31 at 10:00 PMThe rot is, you know, water damage, which I recognize when I see it.
The exterior of the house is insulated enough that it’s a lot harder to run wires through than the interior walls. For all I know it’s even relatively recent insulation, as the vinyl siding is relatively recent, to all appearances. They seem to like to pay attention to repairing and upgrading the property as needed. Which is cool, as they’ll probably be happy to fix the damage around the window and other leak sources to the extent reasonably possible, or help/advise us on sealing things better than they are.
Wayne’s idea occured to me, too, though I’d worry slightly about putting the tape on the wallpaper rather than the window frame where it is designed to go for those window sealing kits.
I suspect that there are places where the insulation is sparse, and where air comes in through places where wires and such enter the building. Add openings along seams, along edges of suspended ceilings, along windopw frames, etc., and you have cold air in one part of the house. Which notably is above the entry hall, rather than above the 1st floor apartment, making leakage easier to envision happening.
