Firefox Ate My Bookmarks
I upgraded Firefox on my machine at home to the 1.0 release version, at its insistence. It’s cool in that it has more default search engines, and when it blocks a popup it tells you with a banner across the top (except Site Meter, which still gets around the blocker).
However, it ate my bookmarks. Gone.
Oh sure, the ones from IE that were imported I should be able to import again. But everything new… gone. Bookmarks Toolbar… gone. On that I had my frequently clicked things by themselves or in dropdown folders; weather, Gmail, blog and control panel logins, etc. Plain contents of bookmarks menu… gone. That tends to be where I would put blogs I ran across and wanted to check out again with the possibility of blogrolling them later. I’d added a bunch. Of course, my problem is I tend to forget to go back and they simply accumulate, as my “link these” menu of favorites in IE had done.
What the frick is wrong with people that they would write a beta that gently offered to import things, then wrote a release that would wipe everything out without mention or apparent recourse? I still can’t recommend Firefox enough, but if you are going to upgrade, you may want to use Manage Bookmarks on the Bookmarks menu, export your bookmarks to a file, then presumably import them back after the upgrade.
Huh. It didn’t do that to me when I upgraded… All of mine are still there on both the XP machine and the 98 machine at home and the 2000 one at work. Hmmm. Not sure what gremlins are lurking in your computer. Good luck.

Do a search on your hard drive to see if the favorites/bookmark html file is somewhere (hey, you have nothing to lose).Posted by RW on 12/15 at 12:21 AMUsing an HTML file strikes ma as an odd way to store bookmarks, but then the only non-Lynx browsing I’d ever done, except a tiny bit of finding out I disliked Netscape on my stepmother’s machine way back, has been in IE.
Anyway, I checked out the situation, and it turns out that Firefox installed a new profile identifier for itself. It could have used the existing one, but for some reason didn’t.
I renamed the bookmarks.html in the current profile folder it made for itself, copied the correct one from the other folder. Then repeated the process and insisted, and it all is back. That means it only lost the autofill text, which is not a big deal.

I had pretty much the same thing happen to me using Netscape: every couple of months, Netscape would get short-term memory loss and I would lose the most recent bookmarks. That was a prime reason I switched to Foxfire. I’ve been saving my bookmark file every couple of weeks, and it looks like I should continue this even with Foxfire. Thanks for the heads up, and I’m glad you got all your bookmarks back.
