First Blog Mails
I happened to look in my folder for the oldest blog-related e-mail a little while ago, while corresponding with Rob, and noticed something about which I had been mistaken. Kim Crawford was not the first fellow blogger to e-mail me. He was the first out of the blue, unprovoked by my having linked or left a comment. Anyway, this made me think it would be interesting to list the first however many bloggers I received e-mail from, linking them if they still exist.
1 - Joshua
2 - Kim
3 - Andrew (there but no longer blogging)
4 - William Femia of MSNBC, not a blogger but about blogging
5 - Justene (on the topic of business-associated blogging)
6 - Joanie
7 - Dean
8 - Andrew (a different one)
9 - Julia
10 - Maripat, of the late, great Right We Are
11 - Theresa (under construction, no longer blogging)
12 - Kate
13 - Ith (First ever Silver Snickerdoodle of Excellence)
14 - Jeff
15 - Matt
16 - Inscrutable American (apparently gone)
17 - Allen
18 - Julie
19 - Geoffrey
20 - Jeff (Repatriate, apparently done blogging)
21 - Kevin
Since one wasn’t technically a blogger, I went to 21 so all 20 first bloggers to e-mail me are included. I also excluded some who didn’t intend to e-mail me, just happened to reach me as part of a “reply all” on someone else’s mass mailing.
That takes us to May 22, 2003 in my old blog mail. Which, incidentally, was the same day Maripat proposed what became the Great Rat Race:
Hi Jay! I was looking at the Ecosystem today and noticed that our web sites have been very close to each other in ranking lately. It occurred to me that it might be fun to have a public contest of sorts that would also just so happen to bring us each more links and more traffic. You interested?
I was thinking we could have a contest to see which one of our blogs can make it to Large Mammals first - and stay there for 7 days in a row. I think we could have some fun with this. And maybe let our readers think of a goofy prize for the winner.
What do you say? If we do it we could both post the contest on the same day to our blogs.
Ah, memories!
For what it’s worth, my first e-mail ever from Deb was July 7, 2003. The second one was in September. Our first AIM chat was October 24, for 4.5 hours. By November we knew we’d be getting married and had plans made for me to go out there.
Strangely, my first e-mail from BusinessPundit Rob was September 9, 2003. There was one more that day, on that topic, then the next e-mail, on September 25, was Rob’s idea that we turned into Carnival of the Capitalists in surprisingly short order. That September and October was one auspicious pair of months.
Anyway, enough of the historical navel gazing. See, this is what I should have been working on for the blogiversary I didn’t observe with as much of a bang as intended.
I wasn’t the first? Oh, the shame! I remember the heady days of Sputnik… wait. That was Hunt for Red October. I remember the heady days of Jay, Sama, Zombyboy pinging each other in an echo chamber. I long for those days…
