Happy Birthday
To my maternal grandmother, Hazel, turning 89 today. She’s my last living grandparent or great-grandparent, and her house was the scene of the recent bunch of family pictures.
When I was born, I not only had four grandparents, but also at least three great-grandparents alive, and scads of great and great-great aunts and uncles. So many I never really had a good handle on who was who. For Sadie, my grandmother has the same role as her mother did for me; an extra, especially old, but cool, grandmother to visit.
I think it is so totally cool that my kids still have a great-great grandmother alive. Not many people can say they have 5 generations of a family still living!
Posted by Sharon on 06/24 at 11:58 AMThat’s so nice to have. My last grandparent died nearly twenty years ago. I have a foggy memory of one of my great grandmothers. she lived next door to my grandmother (her daughter) and when we would visit in the summer, I remember her giving me Smarties in a pill bottle. I don’t really remember her face though. She died when I was 6 or 7.
I haven’t though it totally through, but realized that on my mum’s side of the family, due to youngest child of large family over (at least) two generations, that the age difference between my great grandparents from my mum’s side v. my father’s side, is quite a lot. My mum’s grandmother was dead before mum was even born, and her parents were both dead by the time she was seven.
No, no point, just pondering
