I suppose I should have waited a bit before taking a spin around the ‘sphere.
I don’t think I was nearly recovered enough, judging by the way it turned my stomach.
You know, I’m really, really sad to see the way that certain divisions are shaping up on the right side of our humble little home here. It wasn’t that long ago that we joined together and mocked the left for saying that people who didn’t agree with them were ignorant, uniformed, and willfully so. We giggled at the assumption that we were just hateful people who could care less about reality. We were appalled that someone would presume to understand us and pigeonhole us based on our opinion on a single issue. We prided ourselves on uncovering the actual facts of a situation, and worked our spin off of those facts, while tearing apart our opponents who, we assumed, were only looking at the bits that were favorable to their cause.
You know what I saw this morning? People presuming to have the entire story based on knowledge of one side. People claiming to know another’s character based on their opinion on one issue. People characterizing that character. People saying that those who disagree with them are clearly either stupid, uninformed, or both.
We’re becoming the very people that we once thought so misguided, and it’s sad.
Maybe, or maybe we’re all trying to figure out why people who used to read and enjoy one another’s writing came to virtual blows over a particular issue, and still have hard feelings about it.
It’s hard to know whether any of the thoughts I’ve had about it are valid when nobody seems interested in responding directly.
