I’d Like To Teach The World
Show of hands, or discuss if you will, how many people dislike, or find it impossible to listen to, the original I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing song by the Seekers, due to the association with the famous Coke commercial?
Do you have any other songs you react to negatively because they, or a variant, were used commercially?
I created a new playlist earlier this evening, with a selection of 289 songs that I thought would be good to listen to while I worked. I included that one, as well as I’ll Never Find Another You and A World of Our Own by the same artist (which is neither here nor there).
The list was playing randomly and I had gone out to the kitchen. After that song came on, Deb remarked how she hates it, because of the commercial. I was amused, but can also understand it. I think I was exposed to the song in the original form, before it was adapted, but I could be misremembering. At any rate, they at least were concurrent, so I have both associations. Yep, there I go dating myself again.
I heard the new “Teach The World to CHILL” commercial and shouted ‘BLASPHEMY!’ to the TV. Heh.
As for the listening to music influnced by tee vee, I do that all the time. In fact, I have a funky little collection entitled “Songs From Commercials”. (recent commercials, that is) Some of ‘em I love, some are “eh.”
And you know, dating yourself is illegal in three or four states, innit? :: wink ::

Posted by Margi on 07/04 at 12:09 AMI’m a radio professional—or, at least, I was—and I get really anal when I hear a song poorly-cut and matched. Like in the Coke C2 commercial that uses Queen’s “I Want To Break Free”. I don’t know why they didn’t smooth the cut out, but now every time I hear it, all I can think of is that horrible cut.

I didn’t realize that this was a REAL song until I heard it on the movie “Practical Magic” the other day. Everyone always says that the coke commercial sounds like it is saying “put the lime in the coconut”, that because that IS what it is saying. Oh, the things we learn from tlevision!

Happy 4TH y’all!
DawnPosted by dawn on 07/04 at 02:57 PMI think that the problem with “I’d like to teach the world to sing” is that this song went commercial almost immediately, morphing into the “coke” song. I remember hearing it on casey casem’s American top 40 and wanting to throttle my sister who would ruin it every time by piping in with the “I’d like to buy the world a coke” line instead of “I’d like to build the world a home”. I think she really believed those were the original words. God, I still get angry just thinking of it…
