Is Anyone Else…
Bummed out, and for that matter shocked and even angered, by the bizarre See BS network decision to cancel Joan of Arcadia?
On a related note, when we saw Wonderfalls, I referred to it as a twisted Joan of Arcadia. Sure enough, watching the special features on the DVD set, the concept for Wonderfalls was a modern day Joan of Arc “what if.”
So apparently creating a show in which God talks to a girl and gets her spreading roundabout good deeds is an ill-fated concept, twisted or not, larynx-free avatars or not.
As you know, I never watched it, but when I heard the news, I knew you’d be bummed. I thought it was a fairly popular show, so I was surprised.
Network weasels!

ROFL!
Posted by Deb on 05/25 at 04:07 PMIt was extremely popular, though less so this year. May have been partly the direction of the show, partly the slot, and partly the competition. Heck, it was opposite Enterprise, and Enterprise was so good this year that it started to be the winner of the watch versus tape contest.
It’s not even so much that they dropped it, as what they dropped it for. It’s being replaced by a show in which Love Hewitt talks to dead people. Innovative idea!
Then again, I have never forgiven Fox for dumping Dark Angel in favor of Firefly, and never watched a single episode of Firefly partly because of that and partly because it didn’t look very good. My first sign of interest in it has been the movie, after seeing the trailer. But… I knew a lot of people loved it and I was then even madder at Fox for dumping it so unceremoniously after actively killing Dark Angel to make way for Joss.
Friday’s bad for audience, and seemingly more so on Fox. Joan always had a remarkable viewership given that constraint.
The TV execs remind me of typical clueless or self-interested management everywhere.
Posted by Jay on 05/25 at 04:22 PMI held a grudge against “Touched By an Angel” for the same reason. CBS decided it only wanted one ‘family’ show and dumped “Christy”—which I loved—in favour of TBAA. ARGH!
Never saw Dark Angel—loved Firefly
Posted by Ith on 05/25 at 04:31 PMJoA is a niche show, and while those are usually great, they’re also usually not ratings busters. The Pretender is another example. However, if that’s any example, JoA will do pretty well in syndication, and may get a TV movie. I’m betting either USA or TNT picks it up and runs with it.....
Posted by caltechgirl on 05/25 at 05:03 PMI’m bummed because it looked like they were really going to seriously test her with the new character they introduced at the end of the season. I didn’t watch it as loyally after the first of the year, because Stargate SG-1 kind of takes precedence over most things.
I liked Dark Angel, was bummed they cancelled that too. The James Patterson books about the kids who can fly were very close to that story line. I never did catch Firefly, but understand that SciFi is doing a marathon or something like that in July.

Posted by Jay on 05/25 at 06:41 PMJane was one of our favorite shows: a welcome relief from all the cop, medical and reality shows.
We didn’t get our DVR until 1/2-way thru the season, so we never got to watch Enterprise until Jane’s season ended (which we missed the last 2 episodes due to wedding rehersal and honeymoon & I effed up the scheduled recordings. D’oh!).
Showtime cancelled Dead Like Me and HBO axed Carnivale, so I guess Six Feet Under or the Gilmore Girls are next and the upcoming season of ER will probably be its last.
But Lost will be back.
G-D! Wasn’t that a GREAT season-ending episode?Posted by Rob@L&R on 05/26 at 10:38 AMI was rather upset to hear this news. I’ve never watched Joan on CBS, but I just finished watching the first season on DVD.
I always get a little upset when a show like Joan gets cancelled in an early season, because I fear that they’ll decide there’s not enough interest to finish putting the show out on DVD.
In the last year, I’ve gone from having two or three nights a week with at least one show that I MUST watch to watching no television at all. If a show looks interesting (I determine interesting based on what my friends (or Amazon) recommend for me), I’ll buy the DVDs.
It’s similar to the way some comic fans have stopped buying monthly issues, and pick up the TPBs instead.
Incidentally, Jay, Firefly ended up being a lot better than the commercials made it look, and it was still better if you viewed the episodes in order on the DVDs (as opposed to the way Fox aired them). Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’d like it, but if Serenity appeals to you, I’d hate to see you ignoring Firefly just because of Fox’s moronic execs.
