Is It Worth It?
Rob reminded me of something I’d meant to post about: Is it worth it to identify your business, or you as the face of your business, inextricably with some cause or leaning?
Last week I was at the supermarket. There was a product on sale, in a particular brand. I thought about buying some. Then as I reached for the shelf, the brand clicked in my mind. I said “that’s right, he’s a commie” and walked away without it.
Do you ever do something like that?
I don’t buy Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for PRECISELY that reason.
Posted by Jay G on 05/12 at 01:04 PMI’m less principled than that. I merely avoid buying Ben and Jerry’s some of the time.
In other words, I have no rational ideological plan when it comes to supporting or boycotting a company or its product, but I most certainly do give in to whimsical knee-jerk reactions against the politics of certain organizations.
I vauguely suspect that I should either do it deliberately or get over it, but I’m too lazy to give it any more thought beyond that.

Posted by caltechgirl on 05/12 at 08:33 PMYES! Several products are on my negative list now—especially some of my former favorite cosmetics. Screw France!
Posted by Indigo on 05/12 at 08:43 PMThe biggest problem for me is that I love Jimmy Buffett, yet he’s a huge liberal. I’m ashamed to admit that I patronize his concerts regularly.
Posted by Rob on 05/12 at 10:17 PMI do some pretty fancy rationalizing. I rationalized buying a jar of Newman’s Own salsa. The label said all the proceeds after taxes go for “educational” purposes, so I told myself it was going to teach kids about Reagan winning the Cold War. When it comes to films, I have a really hard time because I LOVE movies, but sometimes I’m watching one with some well-known activist-liberal actor in it and I have trouble NOT thinking about his/her activism DURING the movie. So I hang my head and try to just focus on my popcorn, like Martha Stewart focused on her salad, ‘til it passes. I feel so much better having confessed this personal failing. Heh.
