Mango
I have never in my life purchased a mango before. I meant to ask this before I did so, but what the heck. Is 99 cents each a good price for mango? In Massachusetts? That’s what it’s on sale for at Roche Brothers this week.
Since one of Sadie’s absolute favorite babyfoods was the apple-mango-kiwi, which primarily tastes of mango, I thought it would be nice to try the real thing. I also bought kiwis, bananas, pears, apples, and yellow nectarines. The nectarines are fully ripe, so I was able to cut one up for her to eat with no steaming to soften it as I had to do with the white nectarines I bought earlier in the week. Never had the latter. Both were yummy.
For supper, including what she ate from our plates or as diversionary food, Sadie had the majority of a yellow nectarine, some steamed pear pieces, a mess of freedom-style green beans, several small shreds of pastrami (which got a “best food ever” reaction), half a slice of German bologna (which she merely liked), a significant portion of a bulkie-sized roll, four Townhouse crackers, sharp cheddar cheese equivalent to around a traditional slice of American, and a couple Nilla Wafers. Plus a sippy cup of water spiked with a little apple juice.
This is not an unusual amount, though it was a somewhat different variety. The other meals combined with snacks are pretty impressive in a “where does she put it all” sort of way too.
By comparison, during all of today I ate the portion of an apple that didn’t get steamed for Sadie; basically the skin and around the core, a tiny bag of Smart Food popcorn and a Snickers from the vending machine at work for lunch about 4:30, hot pastrami with American cheese and mustard on a roll, the part of the nectarine that wasn’t convenient to serve to Sadie; basically the skin and around the pit, a bite of cheddar cheese, half a slice of bologna, and a couple of her green beans. Not my usual either, but not unusually light for me.
But I digress. This was supposed to be about the price of mangos, and to a lesser extent about the healthy variety Sadie is getting. And it turns out that peeling and cutting fruit, or preparing veggies for later meals, are great kitchen activities during the time she’s feeding herself and just needs you in the room in case she chokes. If there’s nothing to do, it can get boring, even watching the Sadie.
Dave over at The Glittering Eye posted a great recipe for Mango Lassie a few weeks ago (too lazy to find the link, but it was also in CotR), which is a yummy Indian mango and yogurt smoothie-type-thingy, that is, if you can get the mango away from the rugrat....
99 cents is about twice our “good” price here in NC, and 60 cents more that the “good” price in Fresno, for comparison.

Did I mention Dave is cool?
Posted by caltechgirl on 06/11 at 12:12 PMI became a big when we lived in Colombia (which has great fruit--most of which we have never heard of in the US). The mangos there are hug in comparison to ones you can buy here.
In Alabama (and Texas) I have seen mangos range in price from 99 cents each to 3 for a dollar.
