Merry Chr- Oops, Happy Holidays
Yesterday I went shopping at Wal-Mart for presents for the house Deb and Sadie. It went rather well, besides spending too much.
One funny thing I noticed, though. Periodically they had a “thank you for shopping Wal-Mart” guy come on the PA system with announcements. It became obvious he was under orders to say “happy holidays” and not merry Christmas. He kept goofing and trying to correct himself with the more correctly political phrase.
I dunno. These retailers rely heavily on Christmas shopping. Seems kind of… dangerous, almost… to start dissing the reason for most of their sales this time of year.
Jay,
PC or not, Christmas should be more commercial and with less religious overtones. I think that the Swedish word for Christmas ("jul") is a better description of the holiday instead of naming it after “Christ.”

Thusly, just saying happy holidays to avoid upsetting people who don’t have anything else better to do than get upset is silly. I personally enjoy the look of shock when I say “Merry Christmas” during this season. The shocked expression lasts about half a second, then a warm smile breaks through and I always get a return “Merry Christmas” with said smile.
This tells me most people WANT to say “Merry Christmas”, but don’t want to offend others. To not want to offend others is admirable, but to deprive oneself of saying a phrase that dates back for centuries as meaning nothing but goodwill and cheer is sheer idiocy. Because someone else may have a different perspective or different religion should make no difference. That is if they have half a brain. For anyone who is offended or outraged or some such liberal hogwash this country has religious FREEDOM. Deal.
As you know Jay, I equate PC with many negative concepts: stupidity, cowardice and fear to name but 3. It also sounds like a prelude the the fourth Riech.
That said…
Merry Christmas to you and your family Jay!

Bob
