Mmmm… Cereal
Despite the comedy of errors associated with it, we gave Sadie her first real food a while ago. Teaching her from the first time that food is a highchair and bib event.
She loved it! I did the honors, which was great fun. The cereal came out of the box so fast, we ended up with at least three times what we intended to try, and she happily ate at least half of it. Then was frantic to nurse ten minutes later, naturally.
She got the funniest look on her face, bordering on “yuck!” with the first spoonful. Then she was intrigued, and at one point opened wide and intercepted the spoon. We got pictures and a video clip for future reference.
We started with the traditional rice cereal. Next, besides some fruits, we’ll probably try barley cereal.
Is it strange that I think this is so fun? Eh, probably not.
Pictures! we want pictures!
Posted by caltechgirl on 02/03 at 11:46 PMNot strange at all...it is fun! I love the facial expressions when they are introduced to new foods. Julia had green beans for the first time a couple of days ago. She loved them but her expression upon her first bite said, “What the heck is this crap anyway Mom?” LOL

Your words bring back so many memories…
Five children, all of whom went through the same magic moments.
Thanks
Posted by David St Lawrence on 02/04 at 05:15 AMNOT fruits! Vegetables first… if a child aquires the taste for the sweet first, you’ll have a MUCH harder time convincing them to eat the yucky green and orange things....
trust me.
that is awesome though… you have a VERY beautiful little girl. NOT, of course, as beautiful as mine, but close! And I am a little biased.
I tried to comment on your post about my son, but the comments were shut off… I love the name JuniorSpot and very much intend to use it!
Posted by Jim S on 02/04 at 01:35 PMWell, her ped said fruits, but I was planning to research it a bit before I made up my mind. He reacted to our look of surprise by saying that yeah, he knew, but he liked to do it that way. If I hadn’t been distracted, I’d probably have asked him his reasoning, since I wondered about the effect you’re describing…
Posted by Deb on 02/04 at 02:10 PMAll kids are different of course, but Julia started with bananas and has no problem with the “yucky” green and orange” things.
Posted by Sharon on 02/04 at 05:09 PMI’m hearing bananas a lot. As a matter of fact, I think that’s probably the most popular first food in my informal not-really-a-poll. Just start talking about feeding a baby and folks are full of advice.
The other thing, of course, is that breastmilk is pretty sweet, so she’s already doomed if sweet is the criterion. Besides, being our daughter I find it unlikely that she’ll be unenthusiastic about eating.
