Mmmm… Summer Foods
Sadie had her first experience with corn on the cob tonight. We were out of salad stuff, fruit, and any veggies not frozen, except a wee bit of broccoli more likely to be used in my salads than cooked.
So I popped up to the Farmer’s Outlet on route 44, and in the course of spending way too much, which wouldn’t have been way too much had I skipped the cherries and the sweet bread, I got three ears of corn for $1.29. It turned out to be fantastic. Maybe I won’t have to go to Peterson’s Farm in Bridgewater for corn this summer, though that’s not that far either.
I broke one ear in half so Sadie could have one her size, and I demonstrated. She’s not real clear yet on things like fruits having cores or pits, so I wasn’t sure what would happen. She did actually nibble on it a bit, but overall didn’t feel much like eating. I offered to cut some off for her to eat more normally, but she was fleeing the table at that point. Oh well. No pictures. Overall she got enough to eat. She’d had a bunch of cherries, a strawberry and a hunk of cheese before dinner. She was unenthused about the strawberry, once she so much as glimpsed the cherries. Long memory.
I ended up buying two packages of strawberries, a pound each, because they looked good - a rarity - and were two for $3. I was thinking over ice cream, or making shortcake. I am not a big strawberry person, but these are the tastiest ones I have had probably since I used to grow them myself. When I get a yard with space for a garden, I’ll probably plant them again because they’re a fun and easy thing to grow.
I also got a bag of nice looking green beans, lettuce, carrots, a pepper, apples, pears, oranges, and six Portuguese rolls that were perfect for burgers.
We were gonna have salad, but after I got the corn and rolls, we wanted rolls with the burgers and salad seemed like overkill.
Oh! I didn’t mention our internet outage today, and how Verizon annoyed me, for amused values of annoyed.
