New Favorite Fruit
Last night Sadie discovered a new favorite fruit: Tomato!
She’d had tomato soup, sauce, ketchup (which she loves), but never raw tomato. She saw the little red chunks on the end of one of my burritos last night (steak, bean, cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream in flour tortillas) and went crazy in the cute “mmmmm! Mmmmmm!” way she has, so I gave her a piece. She ended up getting several of them, devouring them preferentially over her steak, beans, cheese and sour cream. She loves sour cream. But then, she loves everything dairy - cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese most of all, and at least likes milk, which we give her a few ounces of each day now.
Of course, these were especially good tomatoes; locally grown plum tomatoes, from a farmstand, perfectly ripe and almost unnaturally red. Who knows, had the intro to them been with crappy tomatoes that are what I usually buy because they’re what’s available.
Her other most recent favorite fruit is pineapple, which she mainly gets when we have Hawaiian pizza. I bought a can of pineapple chunks, store brand, and she couldn’t get enough of them even though they were probably the worst canned pineapple I have ever had. Except for the time I got rancid, spoiled pineapple on a pizza from the Papa Ginos in Wollaston. Ugh.
This week Roche Brothers had pineapples on sale for $2.99, which pound for pound is reasonable compared to other fruits. That ought to be interesting. I had a vague idea what to look for in an effort to get a good one, having asked my sister, but mostly they seemed the same. I can’t remember ever having bought or served frash pineapple before. How long do they keep, uncut? Are there any tricks to cutting them and all?
Also got a mango, the last one they had. Those were on sale too. It’s been a while since she had the last one, so I’m curious to see what she thinks. She’s gone from crazy about bananas to turning up her nose at them, after adopting “nana!” as her word to express excitement about any given food she is about to have been particularly good. Strange. I think it may be a texture thing as much as the flavor.
Oh! She also had oranges for the first time last week. She likes but didn’t love them. Sometimes she devours pieces of orange, and sometimes barely touches them. I peel the orange and break a section or two into smaller pieces for her. She immediately figured out to chew and suck on them for the juice and the good part, and to discard the skin. Usually. Sometimes she eats it all. It was good timing, as she got a cold after we bought a couple oranges. She mostly got over it after a couple days, but still has a runny nose and a cough here and there. Poor kid.
I think that covers the latest Sadie food update you’ve all been looking forward to with much anticipation.
