Ode to a Car
I stopped to fill the Sentra’s tank last night, at a currently reasonable $2.61 a gallon. One more reason to love that car: over 30 miles per gallon the last tank. Usually it’s under 30, but generally not under 27.
I figured out recently that I’ve owned the Sentra for 1/3 of the total time I have been driving, during which time I have owned some 15 vehicles. Obviously most of them weren’t as long-lasting. It has cost me about $50 per month in cost of the car plus repairs. I believe it has the most total miles on it of any of my cars, about 153k, and I’ve driven it more than any of them, over 100k. At 18 years old, it gets at least as good mileage as anything I have ever owned, except a lousy car made the same year that I bought new, when it was new. By comparison, the van gets lower mileage than my first car, a 1969 Nova, did.
I need to buy brake parts and have my brother put them in for me before I get an inspection sticker on it this month. Since we will probably reach some kind of a change of vehicles by this time next year, this will probably be the last inspection it has to pass for me. That’s what got me reflecting on it, even before the even better than usual mileage from that last tank.
