Oxymoronic or just moronic? How about both.
Call me crazy, but I’ve never had much respect for any “safety device” that can decapitate an infant. Especially when the government has mandated that it must be installed in your car and you aren’t allowed to turn it off. Caltechgirl has some new evidence of the utter insanity of airbags in their current incarnation, and wonders why we can’t solve the problem with technology. In a sane world, that’s exactly what would happen. The world, unfortunately, is nuts.
I think it’s fucking criminal that the government has made it deadly for you to put a child in the front seat of your own fucking car. And I can’t help but wonder the percentage overlap between the people who oppose airbag off-switches and the people who bitch that everyone’s buying SUVs…
I’ve always debated the wisdom of putting kids in the backseat, where your chances of accident are higher if you have to attend to the kid, but the chance of injury is lessened.
Compared to putting the kid in the front seat, where you minimize the chances of an accident in the first place.
Posted by Rob@L&R on 06/08 at 02:25 PMMy dad got the “new” Ford F-150 a couple of years ago. The passenger seat has a sensor in it, and if the weight in that seat isn’t heavy enough, a little light on the dash comes on: “Passenger Airbag Deactivated”.
His dog weighs about 90 pounds, and still isn’t heavy enough to trigger the airbag. However, when I get in the car, the light doesn’t come on. (I weigh substantially more than 90 pounds.)
It’s always worth checking into to see if your passenger-side airbag has one of these deactivation systems for safety.
