Recipe (sort of): Baby Formula Fruit Smoothies
For lack of a better recipe this week, and now that the secret is out so it won’t sound so odd that we are trying to have Sadie drink some formula, I thought I would tell you about baby formula fruit smoothies. See, the nursing well has been running a bit dry, and we thought Sadie might still need the nutritional value she would get from nursing. Thus the bit of formula to fill the gap.
Trouble was, she hated it. Thus the need to get around that…
We made four ounces of formula per the package, mixing it in the blender/food processor.
Add some fruit and blend as needed to eliminate chunks. We used mango, kiwi and peach. We didn’t measure, but it was enough to thicken and color the drink.
Other fruits can be used as well. Banana is an especially good candidate.
The caveat: It clogs the holes in the sippy cup, or at least it did for us.
The benefit: She loved it. It was quite tasty, which formula by itself is not so much.
Another use: The smoothy mixes nicely with baby cereal and she loved that too.
There you have it; a recipe for the younger set. Really young.
Could you PLEASE take pity on me and produce a pictoral on how to hack up a mango?
I LOVE mango—and I mean that the baby lovesssss mango lately—but every time I try to cut it up into chunks I end up with mango massacre on my kitchen counter.
There’s no hurry. And you can tell me to go take a hike, too. But I feel dumb about this particular subject and this was an opportunity! LOLL

Posted by Margi on 06/24 at 01:23 PMI have cut up exactly one mango ever. I just winged it. Someone had mentioned them having a large core, which is what I found. It’s different, too, in that the fruit itself got gradually woodier and became core in a not clearly delineated way.
Basically I started cutting pieces off the outside and trimming them of skin, then cutting more pieces of flesh inward until I hit the unusable part. This led to a pile of variously sized pieces, of various hardness. Some of it was fine for feeding Sadie as was, and some needed to be steamed and/or ground into the smoothy, or eaten by me. Yum. Actually, I liked the kiwi better, which is a far cry from the first time I ever tried kiwi, when it was a newcomer to supermarkets in the area. I’d hesitate to buy mango again except for special purpose, but I’ll probably buy kiwi with relative regularity, if only when it’s on sale.
