Republicans Should Be Careful
They are really something of a coalition right now, centered on moderate to conservative-leaning libertarians more than on true conservatives, as far as I can see. The religious right is as much the whacko fringe as are the hardest core anarcho-libertarian types normally most at home getting nowhere electorally in the LP itself.
They have a winning base that would be easy to alienate by going too conservative. There’s much good to be done by being the party of freedom for everyone in most regards, the party of security for us and liberty everywhere, and the party of the constitution meaning what it says and being primarily a limitation on government, not on people. Obviously they are only part of the way there. As long as they go sufficiently in this direction, encouraging but not gagging people on some of the more conservative values, they will enjoy being the majority party.
Liberty is not atypical. Keep the tent big or lose out.
