Revenge of the Deb
I am really, really amused by the range of reactions I’ve seen to the whole overweight-isn’t-necessarily-bad-for-you thing. Some don’t believe the study, some say it applies only to the fit people who must have skewed the sample, and some, like me, have breathed a little sigh of relief, because it’s always nice to have a bit more science backing up the intuitively obvious.
I have to admit, though, that there’s a little vindictive piece of me that would love to see society take this study to heart to the point of overcorrecting. How grand to see the L.A. WeightLoss ads replaced by L.A. WeightGain ads, to see diets advertising themselves with claims like, “With our special high calorie formula, you’ll never have to be stuffed again!” and to hear people complaining that no matter how much they eat, they just can’t get up to a healthy weight. (Yes, I know this is a real problem for some people, and I apologize. It’s the normal weights that are always picking on the overweights that I’m having revenge fantasies at, not you.) Editorials in the New York Times asking what it says about us as a nation that so many refuse to eat, even though we have food abundantly available…
I really need an evil smiley, don’t I?
