Some Whine With My Breakfast
From 12/8/05 to 1/11/06, 34 days:
Electric $140.08
Gas $234.64
It was cold in December. Glad it’s warmer now! But damn, do the washer and dryer really use that much electricity? Maybe the air purifiers do?
By comparison, the 27 days 10/11/05 to 11/7/05 were $80.72 gas and $70.52 electric. I can’t find the one that fell mostly in November, but the combined total for the two was $390.59, including any credits and adjustments not reflected in the base readings.
Hey, it’s almost a pattern! Each month has been about one and a half times the preceding month. How sad the warm January will ruin the pattern. Plus we’ve done some sealing of heat loss.
The disturbing thing is that these are low utility rates. In Stoughton the equivalent usage would have been more money.
Ours this month: Electric: $153.12
Gas: $331.02It is scary when you think about how expensive it is...and how much more it would be in a town that does not have municipal utilities. I think it’s great the MG&E gives you a discount if you pay by a certain date. It’s been a few years since we have lived in Plymouth which had NStar but I don’t remember them giving a discount. Our discount this month was $21.12. Looking forward to Ryun being able to cash his vacation check (he gets a check in Jan and July every year) so we can by wood for the wood stove. It heats the kitchen, living room and the upstairs bedrooms so we don’t ever need the heat, except in the office and our bedroom.

PWP (Dec. AND Jan.): $72.59
SoCalGas (Jan.): $35.32 (note, this is more than TWICE last month’s bill)But the total is about what I was paying per month in NC in a normal month, twice this in Jan/Feb or Jul/Aug.....
Posted by caltechgirl on 01/27 at 02:17 PMTwo things to consider in regards to the electric bill:
The electric bill probably has some kind of fuel surcharge on it.
Your electric may be supplying somebody else in the building. At the old Manse I found out that of the five outlets in the laundry room, four were on my service and one was on the upstairs neighbor’s service. But they were wired in such a way that when the neighbors thought they were running an electric heater on their service it was actually running on mine. Over one month period a couple of January’s ago, my ‘normal’ $75 electric bill for January doubled, yet I wasn’t using any more power than before. It took a little detective work with a DMM and the help of one of the neighbors to figure out what happened.
