That Went Well…
Today I hooked up the washer and dryer.
The dryer had been acting up, and in a quick test it actually sounded better. It also hooked up more easily than I have ever experienced. Usually hooking a dryer to a vent hose results in the expenditure of much time and many vehement exclamations. Still, we figured it would be but a matter of time. It’s also missing a foot, somehow.
The washer hooked up fine, but was a pain to get visually level. I didn’t have an actual level available to be certain, but we’d done it by eye at the other place.
Then it turned out the valve for the hot water is bad, so if the spigot is turned on, it dribbles. Time to call the landlord.
Deb tried a small load that could be done in cold water. It didn’t rinse, winding up soapy, and it smelled of something burning. The closest thing to it might be the smell from one of those Lionel Train steam engines you put oil in to make “smoke” come out of the stack as it goes around the track. Mild, but not right.
On closer inspection, the machine struggles to spin, spinning far slower than the speed it should, and producing more of that odor. The water drains poorly, too, as far as we could tell. It’s sitting down there with a couple inches of residual water, waiting for further disposition. The clothes were rinsed in the tub and hung in the kitchen on my big wooden rack we’ve been using as a towel rack in the bathroom.
Our conclusion is that we will soon be buying basic models of washer and dryer to replace the ones that are dead and dying. This totally sucks.
Sadie will be happy when she gets to go to the laundromat down the street that has a cool play area for kids.
Sounds like the clutch on the washer is burned out. Try using your delicate cycle instead.
We had the same problem, and thought we needed a new machine, and while we were waiting for money to fall from heaven I decided to just do a load in the tub and agitate it with a broom stick. I put it on, turned it on the delicate setting (which I always use, and hubby never uses) and it worked just fine. Apparently on our very old machine there is a separate clutch for the regular cycle and the delicate cycle.
So far we’ve been using it this way for six months with no problem. We’re saving up for a new one, of course . . .
