The Things She Does
I don’t think I have written lately about Sadie’s antics, which are sometimes of the “scary smart” variety.
A few days ago, her bath water got sudsy in a way it normally doesn’t, so there were rafts of foamy bubbles floating around. She was fascinated. She started examining them, watching the bubbles form up around her hand if she set it palm down onto the water, watching them move as she put her hand deeper and then retracted it, and seeing how they largely washed away if she pushed her hand completely under or splashed with it. She’s six months old, yet I sometimes feel like she should have a “scientist at work” sign. She has also found that when the water is prone to bubble creating, splashing her hand vigorously can make more of them.
She’s also fascinated with the faucet and drain control on the tub, which her tub sits in. Once she declared herself a resident of the big girl end of her baby tub, she could see that stuff, so she kneels forward to try to play with it. She also tries to grab the side of the big tub and stand up in her tub, which doesn’t work well with the uneven, slipper surfaces.
She may not be able to get herself there, but yesterday she stood up on her own at length, holding onto the coffee table in the living room. She’s fascinated with standing.
She’s also fascinated with her knees. Last week I watched her examining her knees, feeling them with a hand, bending her leg and watching what the knee did. It was like a “that’s where my leg bends and I can control it” experiment.
She loves my briefcase, which is one of those many compartment, soft ones, somewhat resembling a laptop case. I am in the habit of having it beside my chair in the computer room when it’s not with me at work, and the front main compartment is usually open. I keep pills in there, so when I need ibuprofen or Maalox, I just reach down and grab it. She can get in there now, and still wants to despite having her own empty, tightly capped Maalox container to play with. Last week she watched intently from across the room as I zipped the bag, then she crawled over and went for the zipper tab to see what she could do.
Speaking of crawling, she officially hasn’t yet, even though she can get around a room, and has left the room, like lightning. However, we think she may have crawled at least twice when we weren’t actually watching. It’s going to be any time now, assuming she doesn’t stand up and walk first. And she’s not that good.
Ah, I almost forgot! She almost pulled herself up to standing, I think it was yesterday, but she was in the bassinet we use as a changing table (though it’s getting a little small for that), so the right height and leverage for completing the move was not available.
She poses now, to some degree, and just loves seeing pictures of herself. It’s a good way to distract her if she starts to whine; let her see pictures of herslef on the computer. She seems to have known it’s her in the mirror for a long time now, but doesn’t usually get excited about it the same way. We look in the mirror after each bath, when she’s wrapped in a towel.
She has to be absurdly hungy before she’ll just let you feed her without wanting to do it herself. It makes meals much longer, handing her the spoon. Nothing new, but she’s more vehement, and better at it, all the time. The cheap plastic spoons are the best teething toy ever.
Speaking of which, last night she loved the apple/mango/kiwi combo, which is quite possibly the tastiest baby food we’ve tried.
I’m sure I’m forgetting something. She seems to be on a growth spurt at the moment, so she’s eating voraciously and either getting up middle of the night, or first thing in the morning. We were getting used to her sleeping 9 - 11 hours a night! Oh well.
