The Vanilla Icing On The Cake

Anyone watch Hit Me Baby 1 More Time tonight?  We happened to catch it.  Normally it’s the night we’d watch Cooking Under Fire, but it was a rerun, apparently because PBS was fundraising.  Which they do an awful lot these days.  Didn’t that used to be like a twice annual thing?

Anyway, we saw it all and figured anyone was a possible winner except Vanilla Ice.  Which the MC dude pronounced Vaniller Ice or Vanilla Rice, cracking Deb up.  But at least some of Boston’s dropped R’s were being consumed elsewhere.  There was just no way Vanilla Ice could win, with the rest of them as good as they surprisingly were.  You could tell The Knack has been playing lately.

Lo and behold, he won!  What the...?  Are those audience members insane?  Perhaps it’s just an age thing.  The crowd looked awfully young.

1. I, too, was appalled at my first exposure to “Hit Me Baby” (I worked too late and missed the first week). First, White Rice performs (I can’t call it “sings") his ripoff piece (he owes his so-called career to David Bowie and Queens’ “Under Pressure"), then when he’s supposed to cover another song, he uses just the title and general theme. I’m actually fond of Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor,” and was curious how he’d handle something written for their very distinctive vocal styles.

   Instead, he just confirmed my previous opinion of him—he’s an a-hole.

   So, is there still gonna be a New England Blogger gathering, or what?

2. Alternately, maybe the audience was just cynical, and thought it would be a great goof to vote for the worst act. It was a shame—the Knack did great.

3. First view for us too. I was stunned. Vanillerice was the WORST. The Knack, impressive, and Motels not so bad, either.

5. I, for one, think we should cut the VIceMan some slack. Times must be tough for him. After all, he apparently can’t afford pants with two legs.
