Things I’ve learned the hard way, #478.
As soon as you birth that baby, no matter how tired you are, how sick you are, or how badly the poor thing wants a meal, call your insurance company. Call them before you call your mother, or your partner’s mother, or anyone else. I know you have 30 days to add the baby, but if you wait a week or two, you’ll create billing nightmares that it will take you the next year to clear up.
Trust me on this one.
We had a different sort of issue with the billing for Emrack’s birth, but it went away quite quickly. The insurance didn’t cover well baby care for the ten days both were in the hospital while she recovered from the delivery. The lawyer who didn’t want to sue a university hospital with a law school next door over a mistake which was dealt with promptly was quite willing to write a letter requesting medical records associated with that bill.
