Weird Habits?
I was also tagged here by Jen with a “5 weird habits” meme, which is better than some. I am going to break the rules by not tagging anyone, but in the immortal words of Mr. Loaf, two out of three ain’t bad.
I’ve been trying to think of what habits I’d include and had some trouble with it, so this may not be the best five that exist.
1 - Cash has to point the same way. I’ve relaxed a lot, but it dates back to when I worked at a convenience store. I remembered this one when I counted what was in my pocket yesterday, putting it all the same way, flattening the folded corners, and ordering it by denomination.
2 - I have trouble cleaning because I want to do it perfectly and completely or not even start. This perfectionist tendency applies to other things, but that’s an obvious manifestation. I also find it way too easy to slide into things like making sure the ends of a towel line up on either side of the rack, making sure two towels hanging side by side align with each other, making sure all my shirts on hangers point the same way, and so forth.
3 - I am fussy about things like house rules. This is why something like parking at the apartment gets me riled. If there are three apartments, each with an assigned spot, you never ever take someone else’s spot rather than your own. If I live somewhere with people and there’s a rule that has been imposed or agreed upon, I’ll follow it and get annoyed that others don’t. It applies or it doesn’t. It doesn’t apply to me but not to you.
4 - I am known as an “end peeker” and give into the temptation all too often when reading books. Along the same lines, I seldom mind being “spoiled” about an unread book or unseen movie. I also have a habit of rereading certain books periodically, often getting in a mood where I choose an “old friend” over something I have never read, no matter how appealing it may sound. I do the same with movies. Proverbial comfort food.
5 - Once I started thinking of things, I came up with a whole pile and could keep going and going. When I cook, I usually prefer to be alone in the kitchen. I don’t like being accompanied while working much of the time, yet at the same time I work better in an environment where other people exist and can be interacted with readily. I hate anyone watching while I work on something new to me. I find it difficult to concentrate on certain types of work, like programming or accounting, without music. If my concentration is broken, it can be nearly impossible to get it back, so it’s bad that I can be easily distracted or redirected. I love saltine crackers in soup, but generally only chicken, especially if it’s not thick to begin with, and will add enough crackers to render the soup almost solid food. Since I never keep saltines on hand, I discovered that tortilla chips are even better as a chicken soup additive. I can find it hard to sleep without white noise, though that’s improved. Conversely, white noise where I shouldn’t be sleeping can lull me to sleep. I put both sugar and Sweet & Low in my coffee, so it’s really sweet without any trouble dissolving all the sugar, a habit that started when I was young with iced coffee. I prefer to sit at the end of a movie theater row, even if it means viewing the screen at an angle, though I ignore this preference if I am with other people. I invariably forget to account for the time it will take to clear ice and snow in the winter when figuring how much time I need to get ready and be somewhere. I hate to make or receive phone calls, prefering e-mail or in-person contact, but when I am on the phone, I can easily talk for hours. I am the world’s worst radio station changer in the car, unless someone is riding with me.
So pick one, and that’s number 5.
1) I also face and order my bills. Makes transactions vastly simpler. Usually reverse out. Always small bills out; never a flash roll.
4) Spoiler alert: the good guys win.
