Would he have been as famous if his name was Shallow Navel?
It looks like Dean pretty much wrote my Deep Throat post for me, which is awfully nice of him.
I’d probably be just a bit stronger, in that I often wonder whether Woodward and Bernstein did more damage to the nation that Nixon ever did in that the press seems sometimes to think that they exist as an additional branch of government that’s there to boss the other three around. I’d give at least even odds that my take is a bit overwrought and you should stick with Dean’s more reasonable language. Their error is, after all, one of degree rather than kind, methinks.
You don’t seem overwrought to me. Maybe because I agree with you?
Just finished trying to explain to the 27 year old sales assistant who Deep Throat is and what Watergate was.

Thanks.
There is an odd divide I’ve often noticed between myself and those who are just a few years younger than I am when it comes to knowledge of culture and politics. I was born a few months after Nixon resigned, so I don’t remember any of this, but it’s still very much a part of my “background” (for lack of a better word). My 27 year old brother has always lived in a different world, so to speak. Different outlook, different music, different political background, different view of history, different tastes. It’s really noticable. So it doesn’t surprise me too much that there are 27 year olds wandering around who don’t get it.
I have a friend who claims that the generation gap can be definied by Star Wars, one generation being the one born before it first opened, the other after. Seems to be frighteningly accurate to me. Heh.
